The use of smartphones has become an inalienable part of everyday life of people of almost all ages globally. 91% of the world population owns a mobile device. According to surveys, young people have the strongest need in mobile devices. 18-24 years old respondents reported they could not imagine their routine without smartphones as they take pivotal role in various processes: communication with friends and family, jobs, studies, reading news etc. On average, people spend 3 hours a day using mobile technologies.

Smartphones are irreplaceable in many activities and bring unique advantages. But they also can be harmful for health, physical and mental abilities. This is why such questions as “Where and how do people use smartphones”, “What apps are preferable”, “How does the usage influence their life rhythm”, “What are the main advantages of the gadgets and what are the hidden threats of their constant use” are extremely important nowadays.

For 50% of users smartphones serve as the main Internet source. There is a correlation between lifestyle, job field, age and social status of users and types of applications preferred. In general, the most frequently used applications are social networks, news and games. It can be explained by flexibility of content as it is optimized automatically depending on the user’s location and schedule. Experts also defined diurnal patterns of smartphones use. In the morning people are likely to use news apps, in the evening they prefer apps related to sport, show business and other individual interests. It is interesting that people are focused on their smartphones primarily when they are at home using social networks, watching videos and playing games. Only 32% of the time smartphones are employed at work. Everywhere they perform informative, interactive and entertaining functions, assist users during work planning, tasks fulfilling and travelling owing to thousands of apps that can be easily customized.

However, experts also warn of the various dangers people can face using smartphones. The negative impact of smartphones on children is especially disturbing. Possible threats of computer games and television for children's development is well known among parents. But as a rule they are not aware of the smartphones impact on social, physical and emotional development of their children. The use of smartphones with an interactive display affects mental abilities of children negatively. Moreover, motional activity is reduced and perception of real communication can become dull. Among disadvantages that are valid for people of all ages are sleep disturbance, deterioration of posture and sight, decreased coordination, quickness and acumen.

All things considered, the technologies like smartphones and tablets can make life significantly easier allowing their owners to increase their productivity, develop their businesses, keep in touch with their loved ones and dive in the world of entertainment.
