Eid Al Adha holidays for public and private sectors have been announced in several GCC countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain.


UAE and Saudi Arabia have declared a four-day weekend for private sector, while Kuwait has a six-day holiday for public sector. 

On Sunday, the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has announced that Monday, June 19 will be the first day of Dhul Hijjah, after sighting the new crescent in the Kingdom. It means Eid Al Adha 2023 will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 28, as it traditionally falls on the 10th day of Dhu Al Hijjah. Accordingly, Arafat Day, which is observed on the ninth day of Dhu Al Hijjah, will occur on Tuesday, June 27.


UAE

The UAE announced a four-day Eid holiday for the public and private sectors. The ministry announced that the holiday for Eid Al Adha for the both sectors in the country will start on 9th Dhu Al Hijjah (Day of Arafat), corresponding Tuesday, June 27, and will end on Friday, June 30.

Work will resume on Monday, July 3. The decision was issued based on the Cabinet Resolution regarding the approved public holiday calendar for 2023 in public and private sectors


Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) has announced a four-day Eid Al Adha holiday for private sector and non-profit workers in the Kingdom.

The ministry said in a statement on its Twitter account that the Eid Al Adha holidays for the sectors will begin on Tuesday, 9th Dhu Al Hijjah (Day of Arafat), corresponding to June 27, and will end on Friday, 12 Dhul-Hijjah, corresponding to June 30.


Oman

Oman has announced that the Eid Al Adha holiday for the public and private sector employees will start from Tuesday, June 27 until Saturday, July 1.

According to a tweet from Oman News Agency, official work will recommence on Sunday, July 2.


Kuwait

The Kuwaiti Cabinet has announced that all ministries and government agencies will have a six-day holiday, starting from Arafat Day on Tuesday, June 27, until Sunday, July 2, to celebrate Eid Al Adha.

The state entities and ministries will resume work on Monday, July 3.


Bahrain

Bahrain has announced for Eid Al Adha holidays for employees in the Kingdom. Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, has issued a circular regarding the Arafah and the Eid Al Adha holidays.

According to the circular, the Kingdom's ministries and public institutions will be closed on the day of Arafah, and on Eid Al Adha, corresponding to 27 - 30 June, respectively. As Friday is already an official holiday, Sunday, July 2, will be given in lieu, the circular added.

Karachi’s Seaview Road was blocked for traffic on Monday to prevent people from heading out into the open sea as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said Bipar­joy, now classified as an “extr­emely severe cyclonic storm”, was around 600km away from the coastal city.

People urged to stay away from shorelines as Cyclone Biparjoy now 760km away from Karachi


The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Sunday urged people to stay away from shorelines as Cyclone Biparjoy, which is heading towards the coastal areas of Pakistan and India, lay at a distance of about 760 kilometres south of Karachi.


According to state-run Radio Pakistan, the NDMA also called on people to follow local authorities’ guidance in any emergency situation. Over the past few days, the Karachi commissioner has banned entry to the beaches in Karachi, as well as fishing, sailing, swimming, and bathing at seas within the territorial limit of Karachi owing to the threat from today till the end of the storm.


It came as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in its daily forecast located the cyclone near latitude 18.1°N and longitude 67.5°E, and said the system is “likely to keep tracking further in the north-northeast direction during next 24 hours”.


The PMD added that the cyclone will then recurve northeastward on June 14 and cross between Keti Bandar (southeast Sindh) and the Indian Gujrat coast. The forecast noted that “dust-raising/gusty winds are expected in central/southern districts of the country” on Sunday and Monday afternoon.


Dawn correspondent Asim Khan reported a considerable number of people were present at Karachi’s seaview despite the government’s directives to stay away from the shore.


Meanwhile, the NDMA quoted the Pacific Disaster Centre stating that around 1.38 million people from both Pakistan and India were exposed to the cyclone, of which 305,755 were among the vulnerable population.


It added the cyclone had sustained winds of 185km per hour with gusts as high as 232km/h.


The PDC’s website further said the system is “forecast to remain on a generally northward trajectory through 72 hours, after which the bulk of the guidance indicates an eastward turn, while a few rebels still shift westward”.


According to Zoom Earth’s live radar, a slight change in the system’s forecasted track is noticeable. The new projected route shows the cyclone heading towards the Indian coastline, compared to yesterday’s prediction of heading towards Pakistan’s coastal cities.


Although, large parts of the Sindh coast remain in the cyclone’s “cone of uncertainty”.



The NDMA has also urged people to stay away from shorelines and follow local authorities; guidance in any emergency situation, Radio Pakistan reported.


It quoted an NDMA spokesperson as saying that sustained winds of 150km per hour were around the system’s centre.


Separately, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the provincial government is “completely monitoring the situation of weather in coastal areas”.
