Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones banned from all US flights

Passengers who are caught trying to take them on an aircraft either by carrying them or in their baggage could be fined.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones have been banned from all planes in the US following reports of the devices catching fire.

The order from the country's Transportation Department bars owners from carrying on the phones or taking them in baggage during flights from 5pm UK time on Saturday.

It warned that people who packed the devices in checked luggage raised the risk of "a catastrophic incident", and passengers caught attempting to bring them on a plane could be fined or have them confiscated.

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said: "We recognise that banning these phones from airlines will inconvenience some passengers, but the safety of all those aboard an aircraft must take priority.

"We are taking this additional step because even one fire incident inflight poses a high risk of severe personal injury and puts many lives at risk."

Samsung recalled about 2.5 million of its flagship phones last month after reports some had caught fire because of faulty lithium batteries.

Earlier this week, Samsung permanently discontinued production and sales of the Note 7 worldwide after failing to overcome the battery problems.

Growing concern about the device had already prompted airlines to warn passengers not to switch on or charge their phones during flights, or stow them in checked baggage.

The Federal Aviation Administration recently banned the use of them onboard US aircraft because of the device's potential to overheat and explode.

The firm also sent customers in the US fire-resistant packages this week to return the faulty devices.

The kits contain a protective bag, thermally insulated boxes and gloves.

The South Korean firm said its profits will take a £4.3bn hit from costs associated with its failed smartphone.

Samsung sends out fire-proof boxes for Galaxy Note 7 returns

Samsung sends out fire-proof boxes for Galaxy Note 7 returns

The company has said it has permanently discontinued production of the faulty phone after reports of fires and explosions.
Customers who bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 from the firm's website are being sent fire-resistent packages to return the faulty devices.

The company is offering prepaid shipping boxes as a precaution to protect against possible fires or explosions.

It said consumers who purchased their smartphones from mobile carriers should visit their websites for recall instructions.

The kits, which have just started arriving in America, contain a protective bag, thermally insulated boxes and gloves.

It also contains a warning the handset can only be shipped by ground due to concerns it could explode in the air.

However, customers in the UK may have to wait as the Royal Mail has banned delivery of the phones, making it potentially difficult to return them.

It said customers would be asked to detail the contents of their packages to ensure that hazardous items were not transported.

On Tuesday, Samsung confirmed it was stopping production of the device just two months after it was launched following two recalls and reports of fires.

This follows the announcement in September that it was suspending sales of the phone

It is now expecting the return of more than 1.5 million phones, most of which were sold in America and South Korea.

About 2.5 million Note 7s were recalled last month after reports some had caught fire because of faulty lithium batteries.

The electronic giant has slashed its profts forecast and blamed the financial impact of pulling the phone for its decision.

Shares in the company have also fallen since news of the defect broke, with more than $18bn (£14.6bn) wiped off its value.

Pakistani farmers to be given five million smartphones

Five million smartphones will be given to farmers in Pakistan in an effort to improve knowledge of modern farming techniques, an official has said.

The first phones would be delivered in October, said Punjab Information Technology Board chairman Dr Umar Saif.

Advice from experts would also be distributed via the devices.

"The farmers will receive free alerts about the use of pesticides for their yields," said Dr Saif, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.

Large numbers of farmers in countries such as India and Kenya have also recently experimented with smartphone technology.

Hendrik Knoche at Denmark's Aalborg University was involved in a recent project to design a smartphone interface that could be used by farmers in India, even those with literacy problems.

He said the move by Pakistan was "laudable" but added that, from his experience, there might be difficulties in getting the most relevant information to users.

"A lot of the information that farmers are really interested in is often not available online," he told the BBC, "such as whether a local dealer has good quality material or whether it's adulterated."

At the very least, Dr Knoche said, his experience suggested that even farmers new to the devices would soon pick up the basics of how to use them - and that that could benefit them in the future.

How Accurate is the GPS on my Smartphone?

Historically field data collection was a daunting task reserved for geographic information specialists (GIS) professionals, and the technical savvy crowd. This was largely due to the learning curve involved in operating mapping grade Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. However, smart phones and tablets have changed that. They offer an amazing array of functionality in a portable, intuitive and ever more familiar interface. Think about all the technology packaged into one of these little devices:

    GPS
    Camera
    Network connection (3G, 4G, WiFi…)
    Email
    Internet
    Apps

They’re actually better than the Tricorders we used to see on StarTrek!  They have a slimmer profile, probably weigh a lot less, have touch screens, bigger displays and can be used with thousands of available apps.

One big question when considering smart phones or tablets for field data collection is, “How accurate are they?” A related question that must be answered is, “What kind of accuracy will meet the needs of my project?” You need to answer both of these questions to determine whether or not this technology will work for you. Usually survey grade GPS accuracies (sub meter or sub centimeter) aren’t necessary for public health mapping. Getting within 10 meters is more than adequate to map facility locations, patient addresses, potential sources of disease or wellness.

 How Does GPS Work?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) system. It utilizes a constellation of 24 satellites orbiting the earth at an altitude of 12,000 miles. GPS devices compute your position by determining the distance between the GPS receiver and a minimum of 4 GPS satellites. The satellites transmit radio signals to the GPS receivers, allowing the calculations to occur. Initially GPS was established as a military guidance system, and I doubt anyone foresaw the popular use it has today.

The iPhone has been equipped with an onboard GPS since the iPhone 3, and Android phones became GPS enabled at about the same time. Typically people use GPS to find restaurants and street directions. However, there’s no reason these same devices can’t be used for public health data collection!

Smart phones in fact use more than GPS to locate you. They employ a hybrid locational system combining three separate technologies:

    Assisted GPS (A-GPS)
    WiFi positioning
    Cellular network positioning.

These three technologies are used in combination as they are available. A-GPS is the most accurate of the three, and cellular positioning the least accurate. The figure below shows an example of the accuracy of each of these locational services.
Accuracy of iPhone Locations

GPS Accuracy

There are a number of factors that affect accuracy no matter what GPS receiver is being used. The GPS radio signals encounter differing conditions while travelling through the atmosphere, causing signal delays, and therefore affecting accuracy. The geometry of the satellites being used will also vary. The GPS will have a wider array of satellites to choose from if you’re out in the middle of a big field, versus being on 6th Avenue in Manhattan. You will get better positions if the satellites you’re locked onto aren’t clustered in one part of the sky. Therefore the more sky view you have, the more accurate your GPS will be. In addition to blocking your view of the sky, urban canyons can also cause multipath effects, where the GPS signal bounces off of buildings or other objects reducing accuracy.

Assisted-GPS (A-GPS)

A-GPS is by far the most accurate of the three systems on your phone. A-GPS operates a little differently than the typical handheld GPS receiver. The assistance is provided by the cellular network. When connected to a cellular network the smart phone will download data about the GPS satellite constellation. This allows the phone to lock in on a position much more quickly than it could otherwise. The GPS functionality of a smart phone can still be used if the cellular network is unavailable.  However,  when disconnected from a network your phone will take several minutes to hone in on your location, versus just seconds when the network is available.

The A-GPS receivers on iPhones have steadily improved from the iPhone 3 to the iPhone 5. In addition to the U.S. DOD GPS system, the Russians have a satellite navigation system called GLONASS. The newest smart phones (e.g., iPhone 4S and iPhone 5) now have GPS chips that use both satellite systems giving increased accuracy!  Europe, India and China are also developing satellite navigation systems and in the not too distant future GPS receivers may be able to use several systems simultaneously and become even more accurate.

WiFi and Network Positioning

For any GPS to work the antennae needs a clear view of the sky. Users of smart phones will frequently be in “urban canyons” or indoors. This is where WiFi and cellular network positioning become necessary. Both of these methods are used by smart phones as indoor positioning systems. The phone will use a hybrid approach, using all three methods to locate you. These other two technologies aren’t nearly as accurate as A-GPS, but can still locate you sufficiently to find the closest vanilla latte!

Generally WiFi positioning is more accurate than cellular network positioning. It uses wireless access points and measures the  intensity of the received signal from one or more networks to find the position. Interestingly it doesn’t require your device to be WiFi enabled to work.

Cellular network positioning triangulates your position based off of nearby cell phone towers. Phone companies have precise locations for their cell towers, which when combined with signal strength can be used to approximate your location. Both of these techniques are dependent on overlapping signals from either access points and cellular towers. Therefore they’re more accurate in urban settings.

So What’s It All Mean?

From numerous tests the typical GPS receiver will achieve an accuracy of 1-5 meters.  Unfortunately assisted-GPS accuracies have not been studied nearly as thoroughly as typical GPS receivers. The best studies to date are those by Dr. Paul Zandbergen at the University of New Mexico. In 2009 he published findings showing that an iPhone 3 had an average accuracy of 8 meters. In that study the error never exceeded 30 meters. Below are the results of his 2009 study including all three locational systems.

    3G iPhone w/ A-GPS ~ 8 meters
    3G iPhone w/ wifi ~ 74 meters
    3G iPhone w/ Cellular positioning ~ 600 meters

Numerous anecdotal studies indicate that the iPhone 4S/5 has become more accurate. In 2011 Dr. Zandbergen tested several Android smart phones. Here he found the accuracies to be slightly better than the 2009 study. They ranged from 5-8 meters. It is likely that the iPhone 4S/5 is within this range as well. It can also be assumed that iPads and other Android tablets will be comparable.

Other Options for Increasing Accuracy

There are several third party external GPS receivers that connect to the smart phone via Bluetooth. For example, the Dual 150S can be used to increase accuracy in more remote locations.  It can be worn like a wrist watch, placed on a car dash or strapped to a backpack. It will provide 2.5 meter accuracy and only costs $100.

Summary

If getting within 5-8 meters meets your data requirements smart phones and tablets are a great way to go. If you need greater accuracy you can combine an external Bluetooth GPS receiver with your device and get that accuracy down to the 2-3 meter range. If you require more accuracy than that you will need to invest in a mapping grade GPS receiver.

Tiny Screens Can Cause Big Vision Problems

Tiny screens As much as we depend on our mobile devices for viewing and responding to emails, checking the weather, reading headline news, and posting status updates on Facebook, our smartphones may be causing us some vision problems. Staring at those tiny screens can bring on an array of eye issues such as blurred vision, headaches, sore eyes, headaches, muscle strain and dry eye.
According to Jeff Taylor, M.D., Medical Director for YourSightMatters.com, at least 1 out of every 4 eye patients complains about eye strain due to reading text on a small screen. Normally, we blink about 15 times per minute, but this rate decreases by half when we are staring at our smartphone. As we squint to read these miniature  screens, our facial, neck and shoulder muscles tighten, eyes become  fatigued and vision can be blurred or strained. This series of  symptoms is known as Computer Vision Syndrome.
Smartphones can also cause other issues as well. The iPhone’s newest update seems to affect balance and stability with the new icons zooming in and out. Users have complained of dizziness. Reading in bed can affect sleep patterns due to the blue light emitted from the screen. This light can decrease levels of melatonin and make it harder to fall asleep. For all the help that our phones and electronic devices offer, they are literally giving us a headache.
The answer is not to stop using your smartphone. Rather, implement a system where you take regular breaks about every 20 minutes or so.
This is known as the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, stare at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This will help rest your eyes and prevent fatigue and strain that causes those familiar headaches, soreness and blurred vision. This is especially important for children who may be new to having a phone or who may not  remember to give their eyes a rest. Don’t be afraid to set some clear boundaries and guidelines for children so they can learn self control and moderation in using their electronic devices.Computer Vision Syndrome should be temporary, so if you notice that your vision is not returning to normal you should visit your eye doctor and share your concerns. It is important to stay current with your comprehensive eye exams to keep your vision clear and healthy.

Smartphone overuse may 'damage' eyes, say opticians

Opticians say people are so addicted to smartphones they may be increasing their risk of eye damage. They are warning overuse from phones and other devices like computers, tablets, and flat screen TVs can lead to long-term damage. It comes as a survey of 2,000 people suggests under 25s check their phones thirty-two times a day.
Optician Andy Hepworth said: "Blue violet light is potentially hazardous and toxic to the back of your eyes.
It's the combination of not blinking enough and bringing the device closer than you normally look at objects - it strains your eyes Andy Hepworth Optician
"So over a long period of time it can potentially damage your eyes. "When you're looking at a smart phone, the light peaking out of that is blue violet."
He says tests have found that over exposure to blue-violet light has the potential to put us at greater risk of macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness.Opticians say that, although "good" blue light (blue-turquoise) is needed to help regulate biological clocks, it is also thought that extensive exposure to blue violet light can disrupting sleep patterns and affect moods."Although we don't know if there's a direct link with it creating eye problems, there is strong lab evidence it can potentially do that," Andy added."It's the combination of not blinking enough and bringing the device closer than you normally look at objects - it strains your eyes."

'More headaches'

The survey, commissioned by a group of independent opticians, found that on average, an adult spends nearly seven hours a day staring at a screen with nearly half feeling anxious when away from their phone. Statistics also suggest 43% of under 25s experience genuine irritation or anxiety when they can't check their phone when they want. It also found 55% felt the amount of screen time they're exposed to affects them with eye discomfort the main problem.
Eighteen-year-old Alana Chinery from Essex is never without her smart phone.
Get your eyes tested regularly and take regular breaks from your computer and hand held device Amanda Saint Optician She said: "I've definitely noticed that my eyes are getting worse from staring at my computer and phone."I am getting more headaches." Amanda Saint, who is also an optician, says the advice is simple.
"Get your eyes tested regularly and take regular breaks from your  computer and hand held device."

Using A Smartphone In Bed Made Women Momentarily Blind

A 22-year-old woman in England thought she was going blind in one eye. She could always see fine out of her left eye. But on some nights, the right eye failed her. All she could see out of it were vague shapes in the room. At first, it happened about two or three times a week. Then it started happening every night. When she went to the doctor, her vision appeared normal. So did brain scans. But it was a disturbing trend.Around the same time, another woman noticed the same thing. On some mornings, she'd lose vision in just one eye for up to 20 minutes. It was bothersome enough to land her in the emergency room.Vision loss in one eye can be a sign that a person is having a small stroke, which is why one of the women was put on blood thinners and the other got a brain scan. It can also signal a compressed optic nerve.
But after further investigation, researchers writing Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine think the problem is much simpler. They're calling the affliction "transient smartphone 'blindness.' ""They were looking at their smartphones and they just happened to have one eye covered because they were lying in bed," says Omar Mahroo, an ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and an author on the letter. The first patient had a habit of gazing at her smartphone before falling asleep. She'd lie on her left side and look at the screen primarily with her right eye. Her left eye was often covered by the pillow.
The other patient, who was in her 40s, had similar problems when she woke up in the morning before sunrise and checked the news on her smartphone before sitting up. It had been going on for about a year, ever since she'd injured her cornea. But around the same time, she'd bought an iPhone. In both cases, nothing bad was going on. Mahroo says. It's just that one retina was adapted to light, and the other to dark.
"The retina is pretty amazing because it can adapt to lots of different light levels, probably better than any camera," he says. "It can reduce its sensitivity, so that when you're on the beach or in the bright snow you can still see relatively well," he says. In the dark on a clear sky, it can adjust to detect extremely dim, far away points of light like stars in the sky.
Retinas constantly adjust when someone leaves a room and enters a slightly dimmer room, or goes inside after being outdoors. But these patients experienced a rare scenario in which that change would
actually be noticeable.
Here's how it happens: Light makes the pigment in rod-shaped cells change shape, which changes the electrical current running to another set of cells, which determines how much of a chemical those cells release to nerve cells, which eventually pass the message on to the brain. After exposure to a bright light, it can take 40 minutes for that process to reset, after which a person can again see in the dark.
The researchers asked the two patients to do a little experiment, viewing the smartphone with just the left eye, then just the right eye on separate occasions. They realized that the eye going temporarily "blind" was always the one that was being used to look at the bright screen. The other eye was likely hidden by a pillow, blocking the light from the screen. To confirm the hypothesis, Mahroo and his colleagues did a little experiment on themselves. Mahroo went in a dark room and with one eye covered, gazed at a smartphone for 20 minutes before turning off the screen. "It did actually feel quite strange," he says of his self-experiment. "It would be very alarming if you didn't know what was going on."Then, he connected himself to a device that measured the current flowing in the photoreceptors in his retinas using electrodes. And sure enough, after flashes of dim light, the retina that had been exposed to the screen took longer to adjust to new light settings."The retina is like a minibrain in our eye, and we're still trying to understand what goes on there," says Mahroo, who studies the cascade of cell communication that happens constantly between the retina and the brain.
Mahroo says since he and his colleagues made their finding, multiple other patients have said they experienced concerning vision loss because of smartphone use.So, should you not read a phone with one eye in a dark room? "We don't know of any ill effects," Mahroo says. But it can be jarring.OK, this next bit has nothing to do with smartphones. But Mahroo says there's an urban legend that speculates that pirates' eye patches could have been used to manipulate vision."Wearing an eye patch allows the eye that's covered to be in a constant state of darkness, which keeps the rod cells in that eye at their maximum sensitivity, what we call 'dark adapted,' " Mahroo says. "So simply by wearing an eye patch in bright light, and then, when in the dark, switching it over to the other eye, a pirate should, in theory, have instantly been able to see well in the dark."
That of course presumes that the pirates were hip to the effect, and not merely wearing an eye patch to cover the unfortunate result of a sword fight.

Pattern And Use Of Smart Phones

The use of smartphones has become an inalienable part of everyday life of people of almost all ages globally. 91% of the world population owns a mobile device. According to surveys, young people have the strongest need in mobile devices. 18-24 years old respondents reported they could not imagine their routine without smartphones as they take pivotal role in various processes: communication with friends and family, jobs, studies, reading news etc. On average, people spend 3 hours a day using mobile technologies.

Smartphones are irreplaceable in many activities and bring unique advantages. But they also can be harmful for health, physical and mental abilities. This is why such questions as “Where and how do people use smartphones”, “What apps are preferable”, “How does the usage influence their life rhythm”, “What are the main advantages of the gadgets and what are the hidden threats of their constant use” are extremely important nowadays.

For 50% of users smartphones serve as the main Internet source. There is a correlation between lifestyle, job field, age and social status of users and types of applications preferred. In general, the most frequently used applications are social networks, news and games. It can be explained by flexibility of content as it is optimized automatically depending on the user’s location and schedule. Experts also defined diurnal patterns of smartphones use. In the morning people are likely to use news apps, in the evening they prefer apps related to sport, show business and other individual interests. It is interesting that people are focused on their smartphones primarily when they are at home using social networks, watching videos and playing games. Only 32% of the time smartphones are employed at work. Everywhere they perform informative, interactive and entertaining functions, assist users during work planning, tasks fulfilling and travelling owing to thousands of apps that can be easily customized.

However, experts also warn of the various dangers people can face using smartphones. The negative impact of smartphones on children is especially disturbing. Possible threats of computer games and television for children's development is well known among parents. But as a rule they are not aware of the smartphones impact on social, physical and emotional development of their children. The use of smartphones with an interactive display affects mental abilities of children negatively. Moreover, motional activity is reduced and perception of real communication can become dull. Among disadvantages that are valid for people of all ages are sleep disturbance, deterioration of posture and sight, decreased coordination, quickness and acumen.

All things considered, the technologies like smartphones and tablets can make life significantly easier allowing their owners to increase their productivity, develop their businesses, keep in touch with their loved ones and dive in the world of entertainment.

smartphones disconnecting us

Really I have seen many times this happening, We used to talk to our parents as much but nowadays we talk to our friends on facebook, whatsapp etc. All day long people don't have time to talk to their families but lots of time people have for smartphones. I see mostly children want to take smartphone along with them to school. Few years ago children used to play catching games, running games, cricket, hockey, Rugby as much and they used to play with each other. Because of those games they  would run, walk and talk but nowadays like to play games on smartphones, tablets etc.
Even when people go to their relatives, there they talk less and use smartphones as much.

smartphones depression

Heavy Smartphone Use Can Lead To Depression, Anxiety

For teenagers, it's a given that using smartphones is convenient. How else would they show their friends about this witty thing they saw or heard? With the advent of apps like Snapchat or Vine, the younger generation has an accessible platform to share moments with friends.

However, getting attached to the device to the point of obsession is unhealthy, a new study has revealed. Apparently, heavy smartphone use may increase the chances of developing anxiety or depression among youngsters.

Lead author Alejandro Lleras said there is a long history for public technophobia, or the fear of new technologies, in society.

"This fear of new technology happened with televisions, video games and most recently, smartphones," said Lleras.

In the new study, he and his colleagues examined more than 300 college-aged students and asked them to answer a questionnaire which focused on addressing their mental health, amount of smartphone and Internet use, and their motivations for turning off their device.

The team's goal was to see if addictive and self-destructive behaviors with Internet and smartphone use are related to mental health. One of the questions in the study was this: "Do you think that your academic or work performance has been negatively affected by your cell phone use?"

In the end, those who self-reported as having really addictive style behaviors toward smartphones and the Internet scored higher on anxiety and depression scales, Lleras said.

Despite the findings, the team did not find any link between smartphone or Internet use and negative mental health outcomes among study participants who said they used these technologies to escape from boredom.

With that, researchers said the motivation for going online is a crucial factor in associating technology to anxiety and depression.

"The interaction with the device is not going to make you depressed if you are just using it when you are bored," said Lleras. "This should go toward soothing some of that public anxiety over new technology."

In a follow-up study, Lleras tested the role of possessing -- but not using -- a smartphone during stressful situations. Participants who were allowed to keep their smartphones using an experimental stressful situation were less likely to be negatively affected by stress compared with those who do not have their phones.

"Having access to a phone seemed to allow that group to resist or to be less sensitive to the stress manipulation," said Lleras.

The benefit was short-lived, but it still suggested that smartphones may serve as a comfort item during stressful and anxiety-inducing moments. Additionally, the relationship between motivations for smartphone or Internet use requires further investigation, Lleras said.

Meanwhile, Lleras said breaking addictive behaviors toward technology may provide an important supplemental treatment for addressing mental health issues. What's more, the fear of using smartphones or the Internet should be addressed.

"We shouldn't be scared of people connecting online or talking on their phones," assured Lleras.

smartphones distraction

Study: Smartphones are distracting us even when we aren’t looking at them

Despite their usefulness, smartphones can be something of a scourge when it comes to getting things done. But it’s not just thumbing away on screens that eats away time. That itch you feel to reach for your pocket every time a phone buzzes or chirps is very real—and very damaging to our ability to pay attention to what we should be doing.

Just receiving a notification distracts people and damages task performance nearly as much as actually stopping to interact with the device, according to a new paper from researchers at Florida State. And setting it on vibrate does almost nothing to lessen the distraction.

The researchers theorized that even when you’re not picking up the phone, you certainly notice it when it vibrates or pings. After receiving that trigger, you start thinking about what it might be, and planning a theoretical response, all of which takes up valuable attention, memory, and overall cognitive bandwidth.

“While message notifications themselves may be very brief, message-related thoughts prompted by these notifications likely persist much longer,” the authors write.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers ran volunteers through a common sustained attention test. They took down the volunteers’ phone numbers when gathering general information before the study, and, without telling them what they were researching or warning them not to check their phones, randomly called and texted a subset of volunteers while they were working on a task.

Even when they didn’t check their phones, people who were called and texted did significantly worse on the task. They were about three times more likely to make mistakes, and were substantially more likely to respond extremely quickly, which tends to indicate that someone is distracted and responding reflexively.

Calls were a bit more distracting than texts for the most part.

The obvious concern here, beyond the fact that we’re all apparently operating in a haze of distraction, is with driving. The magnitude of error and distraction in the experiment was similar to the decrease in performance by distracted drivers when compared to non-distracted drivers, according to the authors.

Best practices urge drivers to wait to answer messages. However, this suggests even knowing there’s a message could be significantly distracting.

It’s not an easy problem to solve. The very reason that a notification is so distracting—that the call might be an emergency—makes people reluctant to shut off their phones entirely.

Best Android phones with a removable battery (October 2016)

Metal designs, thinner profiles and pleasant aesthetics have surged in the smartphone market, but they come with a sacrifice some of you may not be willing to live with. Removable batteries have become a dying breed.

Even if battery life is generally improving, being able to carry extra batteries and swapping them to your liking is an advantage that is hard to give up. In an industry in which all the best phones tend to sport a unibody design, where are the handsets that still offer the versatility of a removable battery?

Look no further; we have curated a list with our very favorite smartphones with a removable battery. Let’s take a look at these gadgets and see if any of them are for you.

Upcoming: LG V20

We still haven’t gotten the chance to publish our full review of the LG V20, but we do know it’s already one of the best smartphones out there.

The V20 is basically the phone for power users. It has a a big Quad HD display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor, plenty of RAM and on-board storage, dual 16MP rear-facing cameras, and a removable 3,200mAh battery. Of course, the unique Second Screen makes a return this year, along with the addition of Quad DAC, military standard durability, and it’s already running Android 7.0 Nougat.

LG is still keeping the official US launch date under wraps, but we’re pretty sure it’ll come to market sooner rather than later. If you’re interested, you can sign up for updates from B&H at the link attached below.

LG G5

While the Galaxy S7 series is a minor refresh in terms of design, the LG G5 sees a massive departure from the design language used in the G series, ditching the rear volume/power setup that first debuted with the LG G2. The G5 also adopts a unibody metallic design that has a removable cap for access to the removable battery and a port for modules that allow users to expand the phone’s capabilities by adding a camera grip and other special accessories.

The distinctly different design of the LG G5 may not be for everyone, but there’s little denying that LG has went out of its way to try and innovate in a market where big changes like this aren’t all that common.

Spec wise, we’re looking at a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 with 4 GB RAM, a 5.3-inch Quad HD display, and 32 GB storage with microSD for expansion. The specs here are certainly impressive all across the board. It’s also worth mentioning that LG has revamped its software, making it faster and less bloated.

LG V10

If you aren’t completely satisfied with the LG G4, perhaps the V10 will suit your needs. It has the same powerful Snapdragon 808 processor and 16 MP rear-facing camera as the G4, but with a few extra features included. Most notably, the V10 sports a secondary “ticker” display LG calls the Second Screen. This extra display aims to provide its users useful information without the need to turn on the main screen. It will display app shortcuts, notifications, and even weather and battery percentage information. Although the placement is a bit wonky, we’re sure you’ll be pretty happy with the added benefit of having a secondary display.

The V10 also has two front-facing cameras for wide-angle selfies, a fingerprint scanner that’s actually really reliable, a MIL-STD-810G Transit Drop Compliant rating for shock absorption, and a 32-bit Hi-Fi DAC electronic processor with support for Qualcomm’s QFE2550 closed-loop antenna tuning solution. It’s also the first smartphone ever to come with a manual mode for taking video.

The Note 4 still has pretty good specifications, including a 5.7-inch QHD AMOLED display, 3 GB of RAM, a 16 megapixel camera and a microSD card slot. Certainly a match for the selection of 2015 flagship smartphones, as well as plenty 2016 handsets.

2.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor
    3 GB of RAM

16 MP rear camera, 3.7 MP front camera
