What is Android and what is an Android phone?

What is Android and what is an Android phone?

Android is an operating system  nearly nine years old and despite the green robot android peeking out of phone shops up and down the high street, there are still plenty of people who don’t know what Android is.

If you fit into this category then have no fear; this article is your complete guide to understanding what Android is, what it can do and where to find it, including the best Android mobile phones, Android apps, which games you can play on Android devices, the very best features you can enjoy and how to update to the latest version.

What is Android?

Android is the name of the mobile operating system owned by American company, Google. It most commonly comes installed on a variety of smartphones and tablets from a host of manufacturers offering users access to Google’s own services like Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail and more.

This means you can easily look for information on the web, watch videos, search for directions and write emails on your phone, just as you would on your computer, but there’s more to Android than these simple examples.

What can an Android phone do?

Android phones are highly customisable and as such can be altered to suit your tastes and needs; with wallpapers, themes and launchers which completely change the look of your device's interface. You can download applications to do all sorts of things like check your Facebook and Twitter feeds, manage your bank ACCOUNT, order pizza and play games. You can plan events from your phone's calendar and see them on your computer or browse websites on your desktop Mac or PC and pick them up on your phone.

Another neat feature of Android is that it automatically backs up your contacts for you. When you set up an Android phone you’ll need to create a Google Account or sign in with an existing one. Every time you save a number to the address book of your Android phone it will be synced to your Google Account.

The benefit of this is that if you lose your phone all of your numbers will be saved. The next time you get an Android phone (or an iPhone or Windows Phone if you prefer) and sign in with your Google ACCOUNT, all of your contacts and friend's numbers will be displayed in your new phone’s address book immediately, no need to transfer or back them up anywhere else.

Syncing is a way for your phone to keep all your information; websites, contacts, calendar entries and apps up-to-date. This can happen over your phone's mobile data or WiFi connection, seamlessly, in the background.

What types of apps can I get on an Android phone?

There are millions of apps and games available to download from the Google Play store (formerly Android Market). There are camera apps that allow you to take pictures with artistic effects and music players which allow you to stream songs from the web or create playlists. You can customise the appearance of your Android handset with a number of wallpapers based on pictures you’ve taken yourself or downloaded from the internet too.

An example of a widget on the homescreen of an Android phone. This one let's you access music play back from Spotify without having to open the application.
An example of a widget on the home screen of an Android phone. This one lets you access music playback from Spotify without having to open the application.
There are also various on-screen widgets to download which allow access to, and the alteration of, settings on your phone, without the need to dive through menus as you would on non-Android devices. You can pretty much create your own system of shortcuts and menus to better suit how you uniquely use your phone.

How can I download apps onto an Android phone?

The majority of apps can be downloaded from the Google Play store (the equivalent of Apple’s App Store), which includes a mix of free as well as 'premium' apps that you have to pay for. Some apps have ‘lite’ versions which are free, in the hopes you’ll enjoy them enough to upgrade to the full premium version. Others - like Pokémon GO - are free, but include adverts or the ability to make in-app purchases.

The same account that lets you backup your contacts can also have financial details added to it, giving you the ability to purchase content from the Google Play store directly. You can pay either by debit or credit card and initial setup takes less than five minutes from a computer.

Although there are well over a million apps available to Android users in the Google Play store, some developers choose to make their apps available to download from their own sites or alternative app stores. In order to download them, you have to change some settings on your phone before visiting these sites on your Android device's web browser. By downloading apps outside of the Google Play store, you do run the risk of attack in the form of data theft or by leaving yourself more susceptible to viruses, so be careful if you choose this route.

Should you upgrade or change your Android phone; log into your Google account and you’ll be able to download your previously owned apps again, without being charged. In recent years, Google has expanded Google Play to offer more than just apps, with books, magazines, music and movies available for purchase and download in much the same way too.

Android updates

Google is constantly working on new versions of the Android software. These releases are infrequent; at the moment they normally come out every six months or so, but Google is looking to slow this down to once a year.

Versions usually come with a numerical code and a name that’s so far been themed after sweets and desserts, running in alphabetical order.

Android 1.5 Cupcake
Android 1.6 Donut
Android 2.1 Eclair
Android 2.2 Froyo
Android 2.3 Gingerbread
Android 3.2 Honeycomb - The first OS design specifically for tablets, launching on the Motorola Xoom
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich: The first OS to run on smartphones and tablets, ending the 2.X naming convention.
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean: Launched on the Google Nexus 7 tablet by Asus
Android 4.2 Jelly Bean: Arrived on the LG Nexus 4
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
Android 4.4 KitKat: Launched on the LG Nexus 5
Android 5.0 Lollipop: Launched on the Motorola Nexus 6 and HTC Nexus 9
Android 6.0 Marshmallow: Launched on the LG Nexus 5X and Huawei Nexus 6P
Android 7.0 Nougat
Android 7.1 Nougat: Launched on the HTC-made Google Pixel and Pixel XL

The latest version, Android Nougat, aims to make the OS faster with a feature called 'instant apps', offers improved battery life with Doze on-the-go and adds native VR support. Here's what's changed between the different Android versions.

Android tablets

Like Android phones, Android tablets come in all shapes and sizes. These can range from the 7-inch screen of the Asus-made Google Nexus 7 to far larger displays, such as the 10-inch display found on the Nexus 10.

Somewhat confusingly, some older Android tablets; like the original Samsung Galaxy Tab, launched running Android 2.2 Froyo - a version of Android designed for phones, whilst Android 3.0 Honeycomb was the first release of the OS specifically for tablets.

Older Android tablets which didn’t run on 3.0 Honeycomb couldn’t benefit from things like the redesigned YouTube app, improved widgets and certain tablet-specific apps like SwiftKey for Tablets.

This fragmentation between Android phones and tablets was eliminated with the launch of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which was designed to operate on either type of device and scale accordingly. Android Jelly Bean introduced a number of improvements for both the smartphone and tablet experience over the likes of ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) and that trend continues with the latest release, Android 7.0 Nougat, which brings features like split screen support to the table.

Do Android updates cost anything?

Android updates are free to download and install. Updates bring a number of new features and changes to Android each time. Generally, with each update the speed and overall performance of Android is improved upon.

Most of the high-end Android phones are scheduled to receive updates first. Most Android phones will have at least one update during their life cycle, with some having two. A life cycle is usually around 18 months, but depending on the phone this can be longer. These updates differ from app updates, which are smaller, incremental releases for individual applications installed on your Android device.

How do I get an update?

Android updates are normally received OTA (Over The Air), that is, sent directly to your Android phone without the need for a computer. Normally, once your Android phone or tablet is due to get an update, you'll see a notification in the bar at the top of the screen. You'll then be prompted to connect to WiFi to avoid incurring extra data charges - updates can be quite big and downloading them over a mobile data connection isn’t advised as it may result in expensive data charges.

Updates are generally one-stage processes and relatively straightforward, but in some cases, you may need to backup/save any media (photos, movies, music) or apps you've downloaded before updating.

How to Get More Views on YouTube

How to Get More Views on YouTube

While your YouTube channel might be producing high-quality content, if it isn’t getting audience attention and views you’re missing out on huge opportunities. However, getting these views is easier said than done. We’ve put together the following guide to help you get more views on YouTube—and save your brand from becoming a flop.
How to get more views on YouTube

Ask your audience to subscribe
One of the best ways to get more views is to ask your audience to subscribe to your channel. This helps make sure that they are aware of any new content you post and puts necessary pressure on you to post consistently. The easiest way to get your audience to subscribe to your channel is to provide a clear and simple call to action—whether through your videos or social media channels.

Use playlists to organize your content
The main thing to remember when you’re trying to increase your YouTube views is discoverability. Your channel and videos obviously can’t get the views they deserve if your target audience can’t find your brand’s content. Organization plays a huge role in discoverability, as YouTube’s Creator Academy explains, “Great playlists can increase watch time and create another asset that will appear in search results and in suggested videos.”
Your channel is a direct representation of your brand, and you want to make sure that customers see you at your best. Don’t present them with a messy, disorganized YouTube experience, but rather a well-curated and well thought-out channel. One of the best ways to do this is to create playlists to organize your content.
You can create playlists, whether of your own original content or curated content from other relevant makers and brands, and help your audience find more of the videos they want to see.
To create a playlist in YouTube:
Find a video you want in the playlist.
Under the video, click Add to and then select the black plus sign.
Click Create new playlist.
Enter a playlist name.
Use the drop down box to select your playlist’s privacy setting. Don’t make it private, as your audience won’t be able to find it when they search YouTube.
Click Create.
You can find your new playlist from the Library in the Guide on the left side of the screen.
Besides playlists, there are many other ways to increase YouTube views.

Optimize your metadata
To get more views on your YouTube videos, think about how your target audience might discover your content. Ask yourself what kinds of keywords they would use when conducting a search, and what sort of video titles would they click on?
These are the questions you need to consider when filling in the metadata for your video to increase discoverability and views. Metadata includes the video title, description, tags, category, thumbnail, subtitles, and closed captions (if applicable). This information helps videos get discovered more easily, and adds important context to your content.
YouTube’s Creator Academy offers the following tips to help you optimize your metadata so that your video can be easily discovered—and get you the views you deserve:
Be short and sweet with your video’s metadata. Instead of describing every component of your video, use a few words to sum up the main idea.
Use subtitles and closed captions. These help broaden your audience to non-native language speakers and those who are hearing-impaired.
Add a translated description to your video for international viewers who might speak another language.
Follow the rules and don’t use clickbait tactics. Think about the kind of information that you would consider misleading if you were searching for something. YouTube provides a great video from their Help Center.
YouTube also suggests that creators, “Observe how titles and descriptions appear in search results, suggested videos, What to Watch, etc. Shorter titles often work best because long titles can be cut off depending on available width. Good descriptions add context to the video when it appears in search results. Consider replacing links from the top of your description with relevant text that gives context for prospective viewers.“

Thumbnail
One key area of your metadata that can make or break your chances of getting a view is the all-important thumbnail. Just like you, your target audience is deciding whether to click on your video based on a small visual preview of the content.
Get more views on YouTube by ensuring your thumbnails fit the following guidelines:
Have a resolution of 1280×720 (with minimum width of 640 pixels)
Use one of the approved file formats: .JPG, .GIF, .BMP, or .PNG
Remain under the 2MB limit.
Use a 16:9 aspect ratio (it’s the most used in YouTube players and previews)
Attract your target audience by creating and using thumbnails that resonate with them and accurately depict the content. “If your video is of a cat playing the guitar, have your thumbnail be of a cat playing a guitar, instead of a weird blurry image of you adjusting your camera.”

Use annotations to boost engagement
There are many elements to a YouTube video that can increase your views. With annotations, you can add text, links, and hotspots (or “spotlights”—areas that show text when the user moves the mouse over them) over your video. As YouTube explains, “When used correctly, annotations can improve engagement, viewership, and help you grow your audience.” If you need a refresher on how to add annotations to your videos, YouTube provides a great guide.
As I outline in my post How to Get More Subscribers on YouTube, some common uses for annotations include:
Letting viewers skip ahead (keeping them watching in the process)
Suggesting other videos for the viewer to watch

Linking to your website
Linking to a subscribe button for your channel
Adding a CTA (sign up, learn more, etc.)
YouTube counts a video as being viewed at the 30-second mark, so if you aren’t keeping your viewer engaged you aren’t getting this view count. Using annotations will help make your viewer want to stick around longer and increase your YouTube views. To get the most out of annotations:
Keep them only as long as they need to be to be read so that they don’t distract from your actual video
Make them small so that they don’t block any of your video’s content
Use less-distracting colors and more transparent annotations to keep the focus on your video
Don’t position them in the centre, but rather at the borders of the video
Annotations encourage your audience to engage with your videos, and will help you effortlessly hit that 30-second mark.

Run YouTube campaigns and contests
One of the best ways to attract new viewers to your content is with incentives such as campaigns and contests. With a YouTube contest, you can reach not only your current audience, but those who found your channel after seeing the contest entries and the contest announcement itself.
As outlined in our post, The Secrets to Running a Successful YouTube Contest, to run a successful campaign you must:
Set goals
Follow the YouTube contest guidelines and policies
Pick a relevant prize
Take advantage of social reach (i.e. encourage participants to share the contest to their own social networks in exchange for additional entries)
Use the right tools
Measure your contest’s success
If you’re stuck and don’t know what kind of contest to run, our guide also offers a few suggestions for how to get more views on YouTube:
Commenting contest
Subscription-based contests
Advocate video contest
Upload and vote video contest
Your audience is much more likely to share your content if there is an incentive involved, so a contest is a great way to increase your YouTube views.
Actually there is not a recipe to guarantee more views on YouTube, but with the above tactics and best practices you’ll be successful... "Seeing is believing".

How to change gmail password

Change or reset your Google Account password

Your Google Account password is the same password you use for other Google products, like Gmail and YouTube. If you forgot your password and would like to reset it or would like to change your password for security reasons, please follow the steps below.

Forgot Password:

If you don’t know your Google Account password, follow these steps to set a new one.

Go to the trouble signing in page.
Select “I don’t know my password.”
Enter your email address and follow the instructions on the screen.

Change password

You can change your Google Account password at any time.

Sign in to My Account.
In the "Sign-in & security" section, select Signing in to Google.

Enter your new password information, then select Change Password.
Important: If you're running Android 5.1 or higher on your device and need to do a factory reset, you need to wait 24 hours after changing your password to reset your device. For security purposes, you can't use an account if the password was changed within 24 hours to set up the device after reset.

Password requirements

Google Account passwords must be at least 8 characters long. They can include:

Uppercase and lowercase letters. Passwords are case-sensitive, so "G" is different from "g."
Numbers
These symbols: ! " # $ % & ‘ ( ) * + , - . / : ; < = > ? @ [ \ ] ^ { | } ~
Spaces: You can't use a space at the beginning or end of your password, but spaces inside the password are fine.
Keep in mind, you won’t be able to reuse a password from the past year. We’ve also blocked some passwords that are easy to guess, like “12345678.”

3G OR 4G, 3G AND 4G: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

The Difference
On the surface, the difference between 3G and 4G is pretty simple. The “G” is short for generation, so 3G and 4G represent the third and fourth generations of mobile broadband Internet. As a rule, provided that you’re on the same carrier, a 4G connection will be faster than a 3G one. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a 4G network of one carrier will always be faster than the 3G network of another.
To be advertised as 3G, a network is required to meet a set of technical standards for speed and reliability, and must offer peak data transfer rates of at least 200 kilobits per second. The first networks that met this standard rolled out in the U.S. around 2003, and as smartphones began to gain more widespread use, demand for faster mobile broadband access saw a corresponding rise. In just a few short years, this push for faster data rates drove the standard forward, and today 3G networks can be anywhere from 200 kbps to dozens of times that fast.

To be advertised as 4G, a network must offer peak data rates of at least 100 megabits per second for high mobility communication (users in cars, trains, etc.), and at least 1 Gigabit per second for low mobility communication (pedestrians and stationary users). Not all 4G networks are created equal though – they come in a variety of different flavors, and some are faster and more widely deployed than others. The most common deployments are LTE, WiMAX, and HSPA+, but LTE is undoubtedly the most widely used amongst major US carriers.
It’s also worth noting that each new generation of wireless broadband typically requires your cell phone provider to make upgrades on their towers, and therefore requires you to upgrade your phone so that it can send/receive signals through the new infrastructure. A 3G phone cannot communicate through a 4G network, but newer generations of phones are practically always designed to be backward compatible, so a 4G phone can communicate through a 3G or even 2G network.

When to go with 3G
You might want to skip the 4G route and opt for a 3G phone if:
Your area doesn’t have 4G network coverage. If you don’t have the network, there’s no point in buying a 4G phone, since it wouldn’t be able to communicate with any 4G cell towers to relay the signal. That being said, most 4G phones are backward compatible, meaning they can still connect to 3G towers when a 4G network isn’t available. If you’re anticipating 4G expanding into your area, a 4G phone might not be a bad choice.
You don’t really use a lot of data-hungry applications. If you don’t plan on streaming lots of music and video from the web, you probably don’t need the blazing fast speeds offered by 4G. Most apps for basic stuff like GPS, weather, email,  and social networking will work just fine on a 3G connection.

When to go with 4G
You might want to consider getting a 4G phone if:
You want a newer model cell phone. 4G networks are becoming pretty standard, so most of the newest and most cutting-edge phones (Samsung Galaxy S3, iPhone 5, etc) are typically 4G phones.
Your carrier has a solid 4g network in your area. If its there, you might as well take advantage of it.
You use lots of data, and could benefit from faster speeds. If you like to watch YouTube on your way to work, stream Spotify everywhere you go, and you rely on a boatload of internet-connected applications to make it through the day, then go with a 4G connection. Having blazing-fast internet in your pocket at all times is insanely useful, and data plans usually cost the same amount regardless of whether they’re on 3G or 4G.
